Mark your calendars for December 15th, 2024, at 5:00 PM EST. The Winslow Homer Center for the Arts in Scarborough, Maine, is set to host a holiday event that promises to be a delightful mix of dance, drama, and puppetry. Located at 11 Municipal Drive, this venue will transform into a stage where the classic tale of A Christmas Carol comes to life in a way you’ve never seen before.
About the Event
“Bah Humbug!” is not just another holiday show; it’s an experience crafted by the talented folks at the Collective Motion Arts Center (CMAC). This annual production is a unique interpretation of Charles Dickens’s beloved story, featuring a blend of dance styles, including ballet, tap, jazz, modern, hip hop, musical theater, and pointe. It’s a spectacle that combines the art of storytelling with the elegance of dance and the whimsy of puppetry.
A New Twist on an Old Classic
Forget what you know about A Christmas Carol. This version takes you on a journey with Ebenezer Scrooge as he encounters the Ghosts of Holidays Past, Present, and Future. But here’s the twist: these ghosts are not just actors in costumes; they are brought to life through larger-than-life puppets that stand an impressive 12 feet tall. These towering figures guide Scrooge through his memories and visions with grace and creativity.
A Production Like No Other
Jennifer Bourgeault, the artistic director at CMAC, describes this production as a unique blend of performance arts that Southern Maine has never seen before. “We are the only studio in Southern Maine offering a production quite like this,” she says. While other studios might stick to traditional holiday fare like The Nutcracker, CMAC dares to be different with their rendition of A Christmas Carol.
The performance involves 22 dedicated performers who have been rehearsing since mid-September. It’s an hour-long show with no intermission, ensuring that audiences remain captivated from start to finish. And if you think this is just for adults, think again—tickets are priced affordably at $18 for adults and $15 for students, with children under five getting in free.
Why You Should Attend
Besides being a part of our Christmas Guide 2024 (and who wouldn’t want to tick off every event on that list?), attending “Bah Humbug!” offers you a chance to see storytelling in a new light. The combination of dance and puppetry provides an entertaining and thought-provoking visual feast. Plus, after the show, you can meet your favorite performers and capture memories with them—a perfect way to end an enchanting evening.
